Options REBUILD HISTORY 51-7865

Five salvaged T-28A’s were found in Ethiopia and brought to South Africa in 1998 as part of a collection of 39
warbirds. They had been sold to Ethiopia as part of the MAP (Military Assistance Program) along with spares and
training in 1961. These aircraft were very well maintained and in 1975 placed into complete storage at Deberzeit
AFB as the Ethiopian government changed its political orientation and arms suppliers to the East Bloc.

BuNo 51-7865 was built in 1951 and accepted into service on 14 August 1953 with an American training facility.

The aircraft finally departed Brookley AFB Alabama Maintenance division at TTAF (Total Time Air Frame) 4289.35
hrs. on 10 December 1961 and went to 2™ Air group Asmara, Ethiopia as part of the MAP (Military Assistance
Program).

The aircraft was used by the Ethiopian AF and maintained under US supervision. EAF operational records have not
been recovered but it is known that T-28 were used as trainers and saw combat in the local power struggles from
1961 through to their retirement around 1975.

Service records indicate last flight sometime during 1975 when the T-28s were upgraded to take the 1820 engines,
then stored at Deberzeit AFB as Russian equipment became operational. These aircraft were brought out of
Ethiopia in a 1998 salvage operation along with many other types. Fortunately the Ethiopian climate preserved
these aircraft very well. unusually for Africa not a single part or wire had been removed or damaged.

REBUILD HISTORY
Airframe

The entire aircraft was stripped down to bare metal and nuts and bolts status. All paint was removed from the main
structure and all small parts. Any corrosion found was repaired and parts were replaced as required. The main
structure was then subjected to various NDT and X ray inspections.

The fuselage has been strengthened with extra braces and rivets to accommodate the last status for operational T-
28s. The stabilizers have also been strengthened to accommodate the increased wash and torque of the larger,
more powerful R1820 engine.

Airframe exterior and interior is currently finished in PPG polar white with cream cockpit in accordance with original

Navy color scheme. All components have been overhauled. All contro! system and surface control bearings are
new and all the control cables have been remanufactured and certified.

Engine

R1300 engine has been stripped down for inspection after long term storage. New bearings and rings were
installed. The various components (generators, pumps etc.) were all sent in for overhaul and thereafter the engine
was hot oiled and a full run up was carried out at Fields Aviations test rig. The engine ran for a total of 5 hours
during which time oil consumption, temperatures etc. were carefully monitored. Oil filters were regularly removed
and inspected for foreign material. No problems were found and the engine was certified fit for service. The engine
will be extensively ground tested again now that it is on the airframe before the maiden test flight.

Electrical / Instruments

The entire harness has been remanufactured with new and modern electrical wires. All switches and relays have
been overhauled or replaced as required. The original heavy and complicated 115V/400Hz system has been
replaced by a modern 28V system. New instruments are installed.

Remarks Aircraft project with all parts.  I estimate the amount of work to be around: 400-500 hours for reassembling and register in a European country.  Aircraft was ready to fly in South Africa but then the owner died and the plane was shipped to Europe. Engine has not run for about ten years and need inspection.  Work needs to be done:   Reassembling of wing and fuselage, mounting of elevator, flapsand ailerons, installl avionics and register the plane. Documents are available of fuselage, engine and prop. European  VAT paid.  More pictures under my website  www.t-28.ch
